Map of "Operation Olympic" the planned U.S. invasion of southern Japan
On May 25, 1945 the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) approve the directive for Operation Olympic the invasion of Japan scheduled to commence November 1, 1945. Operation Olympic would be under the command of U.S. Army 6th Army General Walter Krueger including I Corps, IX Corps and U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) V Amphibious Corps. Overall command would be General Douglas MacArthur as Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers (SCAP). X-Day landings were planned at Miyazaki, Ariake, and Kushikino with limit of advance on the southern half of Kyūshū Island. A diversionary landing was planned on southern Shikoku Island. Also indicated is the staging base on Okinawa Island. Scheduled for November 1, 1945, Operation Olympic was cancelled after the unconditional surrender of Japan.
