Map of "Operation Downfall" the planned U.S. invasion of Japan
The overall U.S. operation to invade Japan was code named "Operation Downfall" Overall authority for the entire operation would be General Douglas MacArthur with planning by Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz and the Joint Chiefs of Staff including Fleet Admiral Ernest King and Fleet Admiral William D. Leahy, General George Marshall and General Hap Arnold. The first phase of the operation, "Operation Olympic" was scheduled for November 1, 1945 to invade the southern portion of Japan including the southern portion of Kyūshū Island and a diversionary landing on southern Shikoku Island. The second phase of the operaiton, "Operation Coronet" was scheduled for March 1, 1946 to invade the Tokyo area of Honshu. After the unconditional surrender of Japan, Operation Downfall and Operation Olympic were cancelled.
