Location Tochigi Prefecture 栃木県 is located in the Kantō Region on the southern central Honshū in Japan. The provincial capital is Utsunomiya. Borders Fukushima Prefecture to the north, Gunma Prefecture to the west, Saitama Prefecture to the south and Ibaraki Prefecture to the southeast. Ashio 足尾町向原 Lat 36° 37' 60N Long 139° 26' Ashio 足尾町向原 is located at an elevation of 3,349' / 1020m. Also known as Ashiomachi-mukaihara or Asio. At this location is the prewar Ashio Copper Mine. During World War II the mine was reopened using Allied Prisoner Of War (POWs) laborers that worked in the mines and operated a smelter under the direction of the Imperial Japanese Army until August 20, 1945 when the POWs where no longer required to perform labor.
