Location Towada is located in Aomori Prefecture in the Tōhoku Region of Honshū in Japan. Located at the foothills of the Hakkoda Mountains and borders Lake Towada (Towada-Ko) to the west. Until 1955, this town was known as Sanbongihara (三本木原). History During 1885, this the area was designated as a ranch area for breeding cavalry horses for the Imperial Japanese Army, because the climate was similar to Manchuria and Siberia. Today During 1955, elevated to a city. and renamed Towada during October 1956. During 2005, the city merged with the neighboring town of Towadako. Lake Towada (Towada-Ko) Largest freshwater crater lake on Honshū island bordering Towada on the border between Aomori Prefecture and Akita Prefecture.
