Location Lat 35° 15′ 0″ N Long 139° 40′ 0″ E Yokosuka is located on the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture in the Kantō Region of Honshū in Japan. Uraga is to the south. Borders Uraga Channel (Uraga Kaiko) to the west and Tokyo Bay to the north. Wartime History Yokosuka Naval Base was an important Navy Yard, Yokosuka Arsenal and Yokosuka Naval Air Factory. During 1944-1945, Yokosuka was one of the key stations for the defense of the Tokyo area until the end of the Pacific War. Starting in April 1945 attacked by American bombers and fighters and carrier aircraft until the end of the Pacific War. American missions against Yokosuka April 19, 1945–July 10, 1945 On August 29, 1945 U.S. Navy (USN) warships with minesweepers enter Tokyo Bay and USS Missouri (BB-63) and USS Iowa (BB-61) anchor off Yokosuka. On August 30, 1945 U.S. Marines (USMC) land at Yokosuka Naval Base and occpuy the area. Meanwhile, the U.S. Army lands at Atsugi Airfield. With these American forces ashore, the U.S. occupation of Japan begins. Yokosuka Airfield (NAS Oppama) Japanese airfield and seaplane base also known as Yokosuka Navy Base postwar occupied by the U.S. Navy. Yokosuka Arsenal Naval arsenal that produced weapons and equipment for the Japanese Navy. Yokosuka Naval Air Factory An aeronautical research center is immediately south and southwest of the seaplane base. The factory has about 50 buildings. The Naval Air Station, which adjoins the Tokyo Bay defense system, is subject ot frequent fogs, especially in winter.
