Location Lat 1° 52' 0N Long 157° 25' 0W Located 50 miles north of the equator and 1,400 miles from Hawaii. Wartime History Used on the ferry route for aircraft being ferried from Hawaii to the South Pacific and Australia. Postwar In 1957, the United Kingdom (UK) tested their first three atomic bombs at Christmas Island. The first test was May 15, 1957. During November, two additional H-Bombs were tested. Other bombs were tested April-September 1958. Afterwards, the Duke of Edinburgh visited Christmas Island in April 1958. During 1962, United States and United Kingdom tests code named "Dominic' detonated another fifteen bombs.
