| Location Lat 40°40′2″N Long 129°12′2″E Kimchaek is located in North Hamgyong Province in Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). Originally known as Sŏngjin 성진. In 1899 it was an open port for commerce. Between 1910–1945 known as Jōshin during the Japanese colonial era. In 1951 renamed Kimchaek (Kimch'aek) named for Korean People's Army (KPA) General Kim Chaek. Today located in North Hamgyong Province in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). Wartime History On August 9, 1945 Soviet two Il-4T torpedo bombers from 49th Mine-Torpedo Air Regiment (MTAP), target Japanese Coast Defense Vessel No. 82 (CD-82) north of Joshin at Lat 41°21'N, Long 131°12'.
