| Location North Hamgyŏng Province is located on the northeastern portion of the Korean Peninsula in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). Established in 1896, North Hamgyŏng Province was formed from the southern half of Hamgyong Province. Borders South Hamgyŏng Province to the southwest, Ryanggan Province to the west, the international border with China to the north and the Sea of Japan (East Sea) to the east.
