Location Engebi Island is located at the northern tip of Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands. During the Pacific War, code named "Fraggile" by the U.S. Navy (USN). Wartime History On February 17, 1944 Engebi Airfield was heavily bombarded. On February 18, 1944 U.S. Marines from the 22nd Marine Regiment made an amphibious landing at Engebi. After a six hour battle, most of the island was secure. During the battle, LIFE photographer George Strock captured a Japanese soldier burned alive by a flamethrower as he emerged from a hole to throw a hand grenade. The island was officially declared secure on February 22, 1944. The island was declared secure by 2:50pm although mopping up continued until late the next day.
