Australian World War I Memorial near Kabakaul
Stone monument was created with the inscription "in this vicinity fell the first Australians in the Great War – 1914–18" with names of those killed in action against the Germans on September 11, 1914. The memorial was dedicated to two Australians killed at Kabakaul: Captain B. C. A. Pockley, Australian Army medical corps (MID) who was shot by a German rifle and was the first Australian officer killed in World War I and Lt. Commander Charles B. Elwell, Royal Navy. Later, this memorial was recreated at Rabaul (Bita Paka) War Cemetery.
