Location Lat 4° 20′ 30″ S Long 152° 19′ 39″ E Kabakaul is located on the north coast of the Gazelle Peninsula at the northeastern tip of New Britain. Borders Blanche Bay to the north, Lesson Point and Rapopo to the west and Tokua to the east. At this location was the start of the Bita Paka Road to Bitapaka (Bita Paka). Between 1884 until September 1914 part of Deutsch Neu Guinea (German New Guinea). Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the New Britain District in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in East New Britain Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Prewar On September 11, 1914, the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF) including HMAS Parramatta, HMAS Yarra, HMAS Encounter, HMAS Warrego and later HMAS Berrima landed a force at Kabakaul under the command of Lieutenant Rowland Bowen. Later in the day, reinforcements were landed at Herbertshöhe (Kokopo) then advanced inland to Bitapaka (Bita Paka). Australian World War I Memorial Stone monument near Kabakaul on the Bita Paka Road with the inscription "in this vicinity fell the first Australians in the Great War – 1914–18" with names of those killed in action against the Germans on September 11, 1914. The memorial was dedicated to two Australians killed at Kabakaul: Captain B. C. A. Pockley, Australian Army medical corps (MID) who was shot by a German rifle and was the first Australian officer killed in World War I and Lt. Commander Charles B. Elwell, Royal Navy. Both were buried near the beach. The memorial survived the Pacific War. On September 19, 1945 photographed with Australian Army personnel standing nearby.
