Location Lat 8° 56' 34S Long 147° 59' 34E Asisi is located at an elevation of 958' / 291m along the Kumusi River in the interior of New Guinea. To the northwest is Wairopi. During World War II, known to the Allies as "Asis". Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the in the Northern District in the Territory of Papua. Postwar known as Northern Province. Today part of Higaturu Rural LLG, Sohe District, Oro Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History During late October 1942, a U.S. Army fifty man detachment from cannon company led by Captain Medendorp joined by the anti-tank companies under the command of Australian Army General Blamey treked from Jaure to towards Wairopi to prevent a Japanese attack from Wairopi towards Jaure while Americans troops were treking over the Kapa Kapa Trail. These troops were known as the "W" or "Wairopi Patrol" and established themselves on the east bank of the Kumusi River. On November 9, 1942 this force had a a light encounter with Japanese at Asisi.
