Location Lat 9° 16' 60S Long 148° 9' 0E Jaure (Jauri, Iaure or Taure) is located at an elevation of 2,903' / 884m above sea leve in the center of New Guinea at the headwaters of the Kumusi River. Connected by the Kapa Kapa Trail (Kapa Kapa - Jaure Track). that splits in two with one track towards Waropi and the another further east towards Buna. American wartime spelling Jaure or Jauri. Prewar and during the Pacific War known part of the Northern District of the Territory of Papua. Today part of Oro Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History On October 4, 1942 U.S. Army Captain Boice while conducting a reconnaissance of the Kapa Kapa Trail ahead of the main force arrived at Jaure. Over an eight day period between October 20, 1942 to October 28, 1942 exhausted soldiers from the 32nd Infantry Division, 126th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion reached Jaure then continued on their trek, strung out due to the arduous crossing. While at Jaure, Lt. Col. Henry A. Geerds suffered a heart attack and was evacuated back to Port Moresby. Afterwards, Major Herbert Smith, the supply liaison officer took over as Battalion commander.
