Location Lat 6° 1' 59" S Long 151° 0' 28" E Cape Dampier is located at an elevation of 33' / 10m above sea level on the south coast of New Britain. To the northwest is Awul (Uvol). Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Pomio District, East New Britain Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History During 1942, occupied by the Japanese and established a coastwatcher station at Awul (Uvol) near Cape Dampier manned by roughly 25 troops who provided air warning about incoming Allied air aircraft. They also conducted patrols to capture Allied airmen who had been forced down or bailed out in the vicinity.
