Location Higaturu village is located near Popondetta inland from the north coast of New Guinea. Wartime History Occupied by the Japanese and liberated by the Allies during the Buna campaign. On October 5, 1942 1st Lt. Terrence J Carey pilot B-25D "Battlin' Biffy" 41-29701 survived the crash of his bomber and was found alive by natives and turned over to the Japanese Army and became a Prisoner Of War (POW) who was executed by sword decapitating him at Higaturu. After the Allies occupied this area, a headless skeleton was recovered from an isolated shallow grave was found containing a headless skeleton "in the vicinity of Soroputa" (Higaturu). No personal belongings were found with the remains. Nearby, but not associated with the grave was Lt. Carey's officer identification bracelet. These remains were disinterred and designated unknown X-133 and temporarily in the USAF Cemetery Finschafen No. 2 (Finschaffen Cemetery) at grave 3492. Although the remains were believed to be Lt. Carey, but were apparently lost by the US Army or accidentally buried as an unknown, as he is still listed as Missing In Action (MIA) today. The Australian administration in New Guinea apprehended, tried and executed New Guinea native "Parere" for the crime of murder. Today The entire Higaturu area is planted with oil palm and is the center of oil palm operations in the Poponetta area. Contribute
