Location The Kokoda Highway is the main road that spans roughly west from Kokoda eastward to Buna on the north coast of New Guinea. During World War II known as the Kokoda-Buna Road or Buna-Kokoda Road for the start and end points of the road or simply as the main road. Also known as the Kokoda-Gona Road or Gona-Kokoda Road. Prewar, this route was a walking track and during the Pacific War portions required crossing improved bridges to cross streams and the Wairopi Bridge at Wairopi spanning the Kumusi River. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Northern District (Northern Province) of the Territory of New Guinea. Today known as the Popondetta-Kokoda Highway or simply the main road located in Oro Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
