Location Lat 8° 48' 26S Long 148° 7' 16E Sangara is located at an elevation of 941' / 286m on the north side of the Kokoda-Buna Road (Kokoda Highway) in New Guinea. Also known as Sangara Blocks or Sangara Settlement Blocks. Beyond to the southeast is Popondetta Airfield and beyond to the east is Popondetta and beyond to the west is Kokoda. To the the south is Isivita. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Popendetta Urban LLG in Ijivitari District in Oro Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Prewar During the prewar period, an Anglican mission was established at Sangara. In 1938, Reverend Henry Holland worked at Sangara until transfered to Isivita and replaced by Reverend Vivian Redlich. Wartime History Occupied by the Japanese Army between late July 1942 until November 1942. Postwar At the end of the Pacific War, many retired Australian Army veterans and members of the Papuan Infantry Battalion (PIB) veterans were granted land in the Sangara area to settle and plant. Sangara School Located on the southern side of the main road, this school had a P-40 Warhawk wing displayed as the school sign until the late 1970s. Today, an A-20 Havoc wing is displayed outside the school. Both wings were recovered from the Dobodura Airfield area.
