Location Lat 3° 4' 60S Long 152° 34' 60E Lihir Island is located in the Lihir Island Group (Lihir Islands). To the south is New Ireland. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the Territory of New Guinea. Today part of New Ireland Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Prewar A Catholic mission station was established on Lihir Island. Wartime History Occupied by the Japanese. Possibly, used as a seaplane base or operating area by Japanese seaplanes. A cave on the island was used by Japanese submarines for shelter. Coastwatcher Murray Expatriate Harry Murray escaped the Japanese occupation of New Ireland. Later in the Pacific War, he returned to Lihir as a coastwatcher to report on Japanese activities, including observing enemy submarines using the island. Contribute
