Location Lat 10° 40' 0S Long 152° 45' 0E Misima Island is located to the northeast of the Deboyne Island Group (Deboyne Islands). Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Territory of Papua. Today located in the Milne Bay Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History During the Battle of the Coral Sea on May 7, 1942 at midnight the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) cover group, commanded by Rear-Admiral Goto, including the Shoho, four heavy cruisers and one destroyer plus the invasion group of eleven transports passed near Misima Island bound for the Jomard Passage then onward to Port Moresby. At 10:40am carrier aircraft from the USS Lexington (CV-2) spotted an aircraft carrier, two or three cruisers, and some destroyers. 92 USN carrier aircraft attacked, sinking Shoho at 11:35am.
