Location Lat 9° 31' 0S Long 148° 4' 0E Mount Obree has an elevation of 10,105' / 3,080m in the Owen Stanley Range in New Guinea. Also known as Mt. Obree. In the local language known as Suwemalla. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Central District of the Territory of Papua. Today, located in Central Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History In late 1942, soldiers from U.S. Army, 32nd Infantry Division, 126th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion trekking across the nearby Kapa Kapa Trail nicknamed it "Ghost Mountain" as it was the highest peak in the vicinity and was often covered by clouds. During 1942, several American aircraft crashed into Mount Obree.
