Location
The Owen Stanley Range is located in the southeastern portion of New Guinea. Also known as the Owen Stanley Mountains. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Territory of Papua. Today spans both Central Province and Oro Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The range begins to the northeast of Port Moresby and ends to the west of Kokoda.

The range is formed by many named mountains. Peaks in Central Province include Mount Victoria (the highest elevation in the range), Mount Thumb, Mount Kenevi (Mount Kanevi), Mount Yule and Mount Albert Edward (East Dome and West Dome), Mount Chamberlain, Mount Bellamy, Kokoda Gap (The Kokoda Gap, The Gap), False Gap and Mount Scratchley (Mt. Scratchley). Peaks in Oro Province include Mount Suckling (Goropi) and English Peaks.

The Owen Stanley Range includes many small villages that have existed prewar to the present day. Villages in Central Province include: Boridi, Daoi, Alolo (Alola), Bodinumu, Efogi, Ioribaiwa, Kagi (Kage), Karekodobu (Karekodobu, Kalikodobu), Saunom (Sanoum), Uberi, Manumu, Woitape and Kosipe. Villages in Oro Province include: Hoi, Deniki, Isurava and Kokoda.

Prewar
The prewar Kokoda Track (Kokoda Trail) and Kapa Kapa Trail (Kapa Kapa - Jaure Track) spans the central part of the range were walking paths developed by local people used during the colonial era.

Wartime History
During the Pacific War, the Kokoda Trail was an important link and battlefield site. The U.S. Army developed the Kapa Kapa Trail as an alternative further to the south. Allied and Japanese aircraft transited this range flying from the north coast to the south coast of New Guinea or vice versa.
