1° 57' 0S Long 147° 20' 60E Ndrilo Island is located to the northeast of Manus Island near Los Negros Island in the Admiralty Island Group (Admiralty Islands). Also known as Ndrillo. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Manus
Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
Wartime History
On March 31, 1944 bombarded by USS Oyster Bay (AGP-6) ahead of the landing. On April 1, 1944 the U.S. Army 12th Cavalry, 1st Squadron (reinforced)
was tasked with seizing and mopping up Ndrilo Island. In preparation for the
landing on Koruniat and Ndrilo, which
had earlier been suspected of harboring naval guns. PT boats and a
rocket boat and artillery provided preparatory bombardment of Ndrilo while RAAF aircraft performed bombing and strafing with heavy mortar fire from nearby
Mokerang Point preceded the assault. The US Army forces landed in native canoes.
No Japanese were found on Ndrilo, and the next day the 1st Squadron
returned to Lombrum Point.
