Location Lat 6° 21' 41S Long 145° 31' 24E Negire is located in the Highlands in New Guinea at an elevation of 5,869' / 1,788m. Wartime spelling "Negifi". Roughly 16 miles to the north is Bena Bena. Today located in Eastern Highlands Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History During the Pacific War, this area was considered part of "uncontrolled territory" in the Highlands of New Guinea. On April 30, 1943 B-24D Liberator 42-40352 crashed near this location. During early May 1943, an Allied team walked from Bena Bena (Benabena) via Sigoiya before reaching Negifi to investigate the bomber crash. The team included USAAF Major Edward T. Imparato plus Lt. Bill Brady, Lewis Lock, Paul Reed and John "Mac" McGovern plus Australia New Guinea Administrative Unit (ANGAU) Jack Elston and Gill Timms plus native carriers.
