Location Lat 6° 7' 0S Long 145° 28' 60E Benabena is located in the Highlands of New Guinea between the Finisterre Range and Bismark Range. Wartime spelling was "Bena Bena". The area provides access to the Markham Valley and Ramu Valley. To the northwest is Goroka and to the southwest is Mount Kalabiga. Today located in Eastern Highlands Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History During May 1943, the Australian Army 2/7 Independent Company was flown to Bena Bena Airfield to prevent the Japanese from capturing the area. In June 1943 the 2/2nd was flown to Bena Bena Airfield to support the 2/7th Independent Company in patrolling the Ramu River area. In the second week of July the 2/2nd moved into position, with its headquarters at Bena Bena. By the end of July their patrols were skirmishing with Japanese. The Japanese incorrectly believed Bena Bena was an important Allied base and Bena Bena Airfield was a military airfield. The 2/2nd remained in New Guinea until October 1944.
