The map indicates locations on the north coast of Guadalcanal with the U.S. perimeter including the Lunga River, at Lunga Point, Lunga Lagoon, Alligator Creek (Ilu River), Tenaru, Block Four River, Tenaru River and Airstrip (Lunga Point Airfield / Henderson Field). Military symbols include the U.S. Marine Corps, 1st Marine Division (1st MARDIV) and 11th Marines. Defending the eastern perimeter is the 1st Marine Regiment under the command of Colonel Clifton B. Cates plus two 37mm anti-tank guns from the 1st Special Weapons Battalion. The Marines were supported by divisional artillery including 75mm howitzers and 105mm howitzers. The dotted line from the east indicates the "Route of Ichiki Unit 20 Aug" advance towards the U.S. perimeter. The orange area was the "Area of Enemy Resistance" where the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA), 28th Infantry Regiment "Ichiki Regiment" under the command of Colonel Kiyonao Ichiki launched their attack from the east bank of the Ilu River (Alligator Creek) with three waves then were encircled and defeated ending the battle.
