Location Lat 7° 45' 0S Long 156° 40' 0E Vangunu Island is located in the New Georgia Island Group (New Georgia Islands) in Western Province in the central Solomon Islands. Also spelld "Vanguan" in some wartime sources. To the northwest is New Georgia Island and to the southeast is Gatukai Island (Nggatokae). Borders the Wickham Anchorage and Marovo Lagoon. Wartime HIstory During the Pacific War, occupued by a small force of Japanese that were quickly mopped up. Due to its rapid captured, the island was spared excessive damage to its jungles and palm groves. Oleana Bay Located on the southern coast of Vangunu Island. To the east is Vura Bay. During the early morning of June 28, 1943 e USMC Raider Battalion N company land from USS Schley (APD-14) and Q Company from USS McKean (APD-5) land at Oleana Bay despite heavy rain, strong winds and high surf, led by Major Clark. Some units were put ashore 6 miles from the designated beaches. Major Clark moved out along the Coastwatcher Trail, inland from the southern coast. After the island was secured, the Marines departed on July 12, aboard LCI 331 and LCI 332 and return to Guadalcanal. Vura Bay Located on the southeast of Vangunu Island. To the west is Oleana Bay. On June 30, 1943 elements of the US Army 43rd Infantry Division, 103rd Infantry Regiment landed at this location as part of the "Eastern Landing Force" of the New Georgia campaign and meet only minor resistance. Kaeruka Kaeruka village is located on southeast Vangunu Island bordering Vura Bay. On June 30, 1943 at 1:30pm U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) Raiders attacked the village and faced light resistance that became heavy. By the afternoon, Raiders pushed through to the beach. On July 1, 1943 at 2:00am the Japanese attempted to land reinforcements aboard three barges that were repulsed and withdrew to the east. Contribute
