Location West Timor (Timor Barat) is the western half of Timor Island. Prewar and during World War II known as Dutch Timor in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI) until 1949 when it became part of Indonesia. Today known as West Timor (Timor Barat) in East Nusa Tenggara in Indonesia. Borders he Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (East Timor) to the east. Today located in East Nusa Tenggara (Nusa Tenggara Timur) in Indonesia with Koepang (Kupang) the provincial capital and largest city. Wartime History On February 20, 1942 at 2:35am a Japanese Army landing force begins landing on each side of Cape Mali and secures the area by 3:15am without resistance. Afterwards, the Japanese "Kupang Force" proceeds over the mountains towards Kupang. West Timor was occupied by the Japanese until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945.
