    Fongafale Island Funafuti Tuvalu (Ellice Islands)
Location
Fongafale Island is the largest island in the Funafuti, located on the eastern edge of the lagoon. The town on the island is known as "Funafuti".

Wartime History
On October 2, 1942 occupied by U.S. Navy (USN) Seabees that began constructing Funafuti Airfield and Funafuti Seaplane Base.

Today
Funafuti is the capital of Tuvalu. Most of the population ilves on Fongafale. There is a cluster of administrative buildings near the airport terminal along with a The Church of Tuvalu.

Seaplane ramp built by US Navy Seabees, abandoned since the war
