Location Funafuti Atoll is comprised of twenty islands surrounding Funafuti Lagoon in Tuvalu (Ellice Islands). Sometimes misspelled "Funifuti" in wartime accounts. Wartime History On October 2, 1942 eleven U.S. Navy (USN) warships arrived at Funafuti Atoll. Fongafale Island Largest island in the Funafuti Atoll, located on the eastern edge of the lagoon including Funafuti Airfield and Funafuti Seaplane Base. Funafuti Lagoon Largest lagoon in Tuvalu measuring 11 miles long and 9 miles wide. On October 2, 1943 forty-three U.S. Navy (USN) ships entered the lagoon and developed into an anchorage and staging area.
