The painting depicts September 1, 1939 when Polish Air Force PZL P.11c piloted by Wladyslaw Gnys intercepts and shoots down a Luftwaffe Do-17E the first confirmed German aircraft shot down during the Polish campaign. Lansdale worked collaborated with Wladyslaw Gnys and Roy Grinnell to create the painting.
