On December 8, 1941 circumstantial evidence points to him shooting down A6M2 Zero piloted by Hirose Yoshio, Maki chutai of the Tainan Kokutai. Afterwards, Keator was credited with his first and only confirmed aerial victory for the first Zero that exploded. This was the first Japanese aircraft shot down over the Philippines.
