Background
Attended Loyola University and was a star basketball player. During 1940, enlisted in the U.S. Navy (USN). In January 1941 assigned to USS Lexington CV-2 to Scouting Squadron 2 (VS-2) as a SBD Dauntless dive bomber pilot.

Wartime History
On May 7, 1942 during the Battle of the Coral Sea, Quigley launched from USS Lexington (CV-2) piloting SBD Dauntless on a dive bombing mission against Shoho. Over the carrier, damaged and returning ditched into the lagoon off the western end of Rossel Island (Yela). The crew survived unhurt and were later rescued.
