Archibald B. Roosevelt
U.S. Army World War I and World War II
Background
Archibald Bulloch Roosevelt was born April 9, 1894 to parents Theodore Roosevelt and Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt the couple's fourth child in Washington, D.C. Archie was named for his maternal great-great-great-grandfather Archibald Bulloch who was the first Governor of Georgia and a patriot during the Revolutionary War. Nicknamed "Archie".

When he was born, his father was a member of the New York State Assembly representing the 21st district and later became Vice President March 4, 1901 – September 14, 1901 then the 26th President of the United States (POTUS) September 14, 1901 – March 4, 1909. His first cousin was Eleanor Roosevelt. His fifth cousin once removed was Franklin D. Roosevelt who became the 32nd President of the United States (POTUS) 1933–1945.

He was educated at the best prep schools including the Force School then Sidwell Friends School. After being expelled from Groton School, he enrolled in the Evans School for Boys then graduated from Phillips Academy class of 1913. He attended Harvard University graduating class of 1917.

World War I Service
During 1917, he volunteered for the U.S. Army and was sent overseas to France and served on the western front assigned to the 1st Infantry Division (1st ID) and was promoted to the rank of Captain. In combat, he was wounded in the knee and was discharged with full disability. For his valor, he earned two Silver Star citations that became the Silver Star. He also earned the French Croix de Guerre.

Interwar Years
Afterwards, he worked as an executive with the Sinclair Consolidated Oil Company, as vice president of the Union Petroleum Company, the export auxiliary subsidiary of Sinclair Consolidated and resigned before the Teapot Dome scandal and gave testimony to the Senate Committee on Public Lands. Afterwards, he worked for his cousin in the family's investment firm Roosevelt & Son. In the summer of 1932, Archibald B. Roosevelt, former President Calvin Coolidge, former Solicitor General William Marshall Bullitt, Admiral Richard E. Byrd and General James Harbord and others formed a conservative lobby group known as the National Economy League that advocated for balancing the federal government's budget and to cut appropriations for veteran.

World War II Service
After the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941, he sucessfully petitioned President Franklin D. Roosevelt to return to military service. Commissioned with the rank of Major. In early 1943, he became the Commanding Officer (C.O.) of the 3rd Battalion, 162nd Infantry Regiment, 41st Infantry Division (41st ID) "The Jungleers".

On July 8, 1943 he landed with the 3rd Battalion at Nassau Bay on the north coast of New Guinea. During the Salamaua campaign his soldiers fought alongside the Australian Army 3rd Division. During the battle, a ridge inland from Tambu Bay and Dot Inlet was dubbed Roosevelt's Ridge / Roosevelt Ridge (RR) in his honor. On August 12, 1943 wounded in the kneel by a Japanese grenade, the same kneel that was injured in World War I and would later be considered 100% disabled for the second time. Once injured, his command was transferred to his Executive Officer, Major Taylor. For his actions in the Salamaua campaign again earned his second and third oak leaf clusters to the Silver Star. In early 1944, he returned to his unit.

Awards
Roosevelt earned the Silver Star with 3 oak leaf clusters, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart with one oak leaf cluster, World War I Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the French Croix de Guerre for his World War I service.

Memorials
Roosevelt passed away October 13, 1979 at age 85 in Stuart, Florida. He is buried at Youngs Memorial Cemetery in Oyster Bay, NY.
