A Source of Pride
A History of No 22 (City of Sydney) Squadron 1936-1946

This book is a history of No. 22 Squadron in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). The author, Richard Hutchinson is a retired RAAF Flight Sergeant who was assigned to the squadron in 1977 has been researching the squadron since the 1980s and the book was completed in 2017 but published in 2023 by the No. 22 Squadron Association committee. A previous version, titled A History of No. 22 (City of Sydney) Squadron 1936 – 1946 by Bert Rice was published in 2018.

Chapters 1 to 9 is a detailed historical narrative starting when the squadron was formed in 1936 and their entire World War II service until 1946. The narrative includes photos, historical records and artwork. The history includes extensive coverage of FLTLT William "Bill" E. Newton and his loss on March 18, 1943 piloting DB-7B Boston A28-3 off Salamaua.

Extensive appendix are located at the end of the book including Appendix 1: Evidence of the Execution of FL W. E. Newton V.C.). Appendix 2: Recommendation For Award of Victoria Cross to Flt Lt W. E. Newton. Appendix 3: RAAF Bostons. Appendix 3A: Bostons A28-1 to A28-22. Appendix 3B: A-20C A28-23 to A2831. Appendix 3C: A-20A A28-32 to A28-40. Appendix 3D: A-20G A28-41 to A28-78. Appendix 3E: other A-20s with RAAF connection. Appendix 4: Beaufighters. Appendix 5: List of Commanding Officers. Appendix 6 Members of No. 22 Squadron 1936-1939. Appendix 7: Members 1939-1946. Appendix 8: Roll of Honour 1939-1945. Appendix 9: Unpublished narrative 7 December 1942. The book closes with a bibliography and index.
