Beyond Pongani Mission One Man's Struggle To Get Back Alive A collection of stories that from the author, SSgt Robert J. Bable service during World War II in the U.S. Army, 32nd Division, Headquarters Message Center forward echelon. The book covers his service in New Guinea during the Battle of Buna then rest and recouperation in Australia and return to New Guinea area with service at Goodenough Island, Saidor and Long Island. The book contains photographs and hand drawn maps from his collection. Author Robert J. Bable was born on June 19, 1919, and grew up in a small semi-rural village in the south central part of Michigan. I discovered who I was while exploring the fields and forests that surrounded our village. As a young man, I spent a great deal of time in the Ontario wilderness where I learned many of the secrets of living off the land -- skills I would need in the remote regions of New Guinea.
