This is the autobiography of Louis Zamperini, a USC runner who participated in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. During World War II, he was a B-24 navigator in the 7th Air Force (7th AF), 11th Bombardment Group (11th BG). The book details his service, including the mission when he and his crew crashed on a search mission in B-24D "Green Hornet". Lost at sea, he was captured by the Japanese and survived as a POW in Japan after great tribulations.
