Shots Fired in Anger
A Rifleman's View of the War in the Pacific, 1942-1945

This book is the memoir of U.S. Army Lieutenant John B. George. During World War II, he was assigned to the 132nd Infantry Regiment, 23rd Infantry Division (23rd ID) "Americal Division" in the South Pacific (SoPAC) during the Pacific War.

On December 8, 1942 the 132nd Infantry Regiment arrive on Guadalcanal. At that point in the campaign, the U.S. Marines were being relieved by U.S. Army soldiers that whill begin offensive operations to clear the remaining Japanese from the island.

Initially, his 2nd Battalion are tasked with defending Lunga Point. Meanwhile, the 23rd Infantry Division (23rd ID) "Americal Division" begins offensive operations against the remaining Japanese Army defending Mount Austen and surrounding hills where they were able to observe the beachhead area and airfields. As the 1st and 3rd Battalion became bogged down against stiff Japanese resistance at The Gifu, his 2nd Battalion is tasked with a flanking maneuver inland and captured Hill 27.

Using his scoped rifle, George volunteers to snipe the enemy whenever possible, often operating with a spotter with field binoculars to help identify targets. The reality of sniping and marksmanship in battle is explored including environmental impacts caused by heat distortion and the many difficulties of shooting in jungle condition. Shots Fired In Anger gives vivid accounts of being behind the rifle, looking down the scope at an enemy soldier and pulling the trigger. On at least one occasion, he was sniped with an enemy bullet passing so close to his ear his hearing was impaired by the crack.

Tremendously well written, George gives a frank account of the strengths and weaknesses of U.S. Army leadership, tactics, weapons and equipment. Likewise, he records keen observations of the Japanese Army soldiers who opposed him, saluting their field craft and tactics but admonishing them for their failures including employing futile banzai charges and the practice of officers carrying swords.
