Ship History
Built by Ps Werften Wolgast in East Germany. Laid down 1967 as Germanischer Lloyd 100 A5 E1 a modified fishing vessel. Launched as FS A. v. Humboldt. In 1970, converted into a research vessel operated by the Academy of Sciences. During 1977 until 1978 underwent reconstruction into an oceanographic research vessel and operated until 1991. During 1992, operated by Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) until 2004.

Acquired by the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) under the direction of Dr. Robert Ballard and based at San Pedro. On July 30, 2009 renamed Exploration Vessel (E/V) Nautilus by Ballard in honor of the fictional submarine Nautilus in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas by Jules Verne. The mission of EV Nautilus is to conduct deep sea exploration to a depth of 13,000' / 4,000m. The vessel is equipped with Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) including Hercules, Argus, Little Hercules, and Atalanta, a multibeam mapping system, and side scan sonar systems named Diana and Echo. During 2021 underwent a partial refit and was extended from the as built length of 210.72' and was extended to 223' / 68m and added a crane, cabins for a total of 17 crew and 31 passengers and a new mission control center.

Between July 2-23, 2025 Nautilus under took an expedition of Maritime Archaeology of Guadalcanal (NA173) under lead scientist Dr. Robert Ballard and expedition leader Daniel Wagner to survey and document World War II shipwrecks sunk into Iron Bottom Sound off Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. On July 8, 2025 Nautilus surveyed USS De Haven (DD-469).
