Ship History Built by Kawasaki Shipyards at Kobe. Laid down January 14, 1933 as a Hatsuharu-class destroyer. Launched September 23, 1934 as Ariake meaning "first light" (dawn) in Japanese. Commissioned March 25, 1935 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) under the command of Lieutenant Commander Shooichi Yoshida. Assigned to Destroyer Division 27 (Desdiv 27) with Shigure, Shiratsuyu and Yūgure, Desron 1, First Fleet. Wartime History During early December 1941 at the start of the Pacific War, operates off Japan conducting anti-submarine patrols and guarding warships. On December 18, 1941 departs Tokuyama to meet the Combined Fleet returning from the attack on Pearl Harbor and Hawaii and escorts them to Hashirijima. On January 7, 1942 arrives Kure and the next day drydocked for maintenance. On January 12, 1942 departs Hashirijima with Yūgure escorting Hiryu and Soryu bound for Palau. On January 21, 1942 operates from Palau for strike on Ambon. PARTIAL HISTORY On March 22, 1942 at Sasebo and drydocked for maintenance. On April 15, 1942 departs Sasebo bound for Mako to escort Shokaku and Zuikaku and escort them to Truk. During early May 1942 assigned to Operation MO escorting the striking force under the command of Admiral Takagi and participates in the Battle of the Coral Sea. On May 7, 1942 Ariake steams to Indispensable Reef to rescues the downed air crews of B5N Kate EI-302 and B5N Kate EI-306. On July 25, 1943 departs Rabaul on a troop transport run with Mikazuki bound for Cape Gloucester (Tuluvu) in West New Britain. On July 27, 1943 ran aground with Mikazuki on a coral reef at roughly Lat 5-27 S Long 148-25 E off Cape Gloucester. Ariake managed to work itself free and continued the mission to remove personnel from Mikazuki and completed the mission delivering them to Cape Gloucester. Afterwards, returned to Mikazuki to provide aid. Sinking History On July 28, 1943 returned to assist Mikazuki when sunk by B-25 Mitchells off New Britain. During the sinking, at least seven crew including Lieutenant Commander Kawahashi died. Officially removed from the Navy list October 15, 1943.
