Ship History Built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. in Nagasaki. Laid down September 6, 1944 as Type D Escort Vessel. On October 5, 1944 designated CD-82 and attached to Kure Naval District. Launched November 18, 1944 as Escort No. 82 (CD-82). Completed and commissioned December 31, 1944 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) with Reserve Lt Takeshi Mori in command assigned to the Kure Guard Force. Wartime History In early 1945 moves to Saeki Bay. On February 14, 1945 at 7:00am departs Kure for Moji arriving later in the day. On February 16, 1945 departs Moji as part of convoy MOTA-38 with SEISHU MARU, DAITO MARU, DAISHUN MARU and two unidentified ships with escorts minesweeper W-39 and Kaibokan CD-55 and CD-82. On February 20, 1945 arrives Ssu Chiao Shan in the Shushan (Chusan, Zhoushan) Islands and departs the next day. On February 23, 1945 arrives Kirun. PARTIAL HISTORY Sinking History On August 10, 1945 at 3:00am, departs Orang Bay (Ŏrang) bound for Rashin (Rajin-Sŏnbong) to escort all available Japanese transports to Genzan (Wonsan). At 3:00pm spots Mukahi Maru beached on the coast after escaping Rashin and attaches a tow rope and pulls the vessel free at high tide. Learning Soviet planes are striking Rashin, departs for Genzan. At 5:00pm targeted by Soviet IL-4T torpedo bombers unsuccessfully and Mukahi Maru was cut loose and ordered to proceed to Rashin alone. At 5:30pm roughly seven miles south-southwest of Kumsudan, spotted by three Il-4T torpedo bombers led by Major Grigori D. Popovich from 49th 49th Mine-Torpedo Air Regiment (49th MTAP) on an armed reconnaissance mission spot the transport and destroyer [sic CD-82] and make a torpedo attack and release their torpedoes. Meanwhile, CD-82 opens and her 25mm anti-aircraft gunners shoots down the two wingmen Il-4T pilot 2/Lt Gromakov (KIA) and Il-4T pilot 1st Lt. Lazarev ditched (survived) and their torpedoes miss. Il-4T pilot Major Grigori D. Popovich made a perfect attack and his torpedo hits the stern of the ship and explodes detonating her depth charges seconds later and goes down by stern at Lat 41°21'N, Long 131°12'E with the loss of 117 of her crew. Escort No. 82 was the only Japanese warship sunk at sea by Soviet torpedo-bombers. For his successful attack, Major Georgi Popovich was awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union (HSU). Officially removed from the Navy list on September 15, 1945. Rescue After the sinking, Mukahi Maru returns and rescues 93 survivors including Reserve Lt Takeshi Mori.
