Location
Lat 37° 55' 58N Long 126° 32' 5E  Wonsan is located at an elevation of 127' / 38m above sea level to the west of the Kalma Peninsula in the southeastern portion of Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) bordering Wonsan Harbor and the Sea of Japan. History
During 1880, opened by the Japanese as a trade port known as Wŏnsanjin (元山津). In Russian, known as Port Lazarev (Lazaref). From 1910-1945 known by the Japanese name Gensan (元山) or Gensan. In 1914, connected to Pyongyang (Heijo) and Seoul (Kyongsong) by two railroads: the Pyongwon Line and Gyeongwon Line. Under the Japanese occupation, the city was heavily industrialized and served as an import point in the distribution of trade between Korea and Japan.

Wartime History
During the Pacific War, Wonsan was used by the Japanese Navy as a base during the Pacific War.

Korean War
Wŏnsan used to be in South Hamgyong Province, but when provincial borders were redrawn in 1946, it joined the northern half of Kangwŏn Province, which had been split at the 38th parallel and became its capital. During the Korean War, Wonsan was heavily bombed and blockaded from March 1951 until July 27, 1953, the longest siege in modern American naval history. The city was largely destroyed during the war.

Today
Wŏnsan serves as the administrative center of Kangwŏn Province.
