Location
Lat 39° 1′ 10″ N, Long 125° 44′ 17″ E  Pyongyang 평양 is located at an elevation of 22' / 6m on the Taedong River. Pyongyang is the national capital of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea).

Also spelled P'yŏngan. The city is part of a chikhalsi (directly-administered city) known as P'yŏngyang Chikhalsi .

First Sino-Japanese War
On September 15, 1894, Pyongyang was the site of the Battle of Pyongyang, the second major battle of the First Sino-Japanese War when the defending Qing Dynasty were defeated by the Japanese Army after a twelve hour battle.

World War II
Occupied by the Japanese, the city was renamed Heijō (Heijo). and developed into an industrial center. During 1938, Pyongyang had a population of 235,000. The Japanese occupied the city for the duration of the Pacific War. On August 25, 1945 during "Operation August Storm" the Red Army 25th Army occupied Pyongyang.

Postwar
Pyongyang became the temporary capital of Provisional People's Committee for North Korea. On October 10, 1945 the Conference of Korean Communist Party Members and Enthusiasts in the Five Northwestern Provinces held their first meeting in a public hall (today Party Founding Museum) with Kim Il-sung as the leader. The Central Organizing Committee of the Communist Party of North Korea ("North Korea Bureau of the Communist Party of Korea) is formed. Since then, October 10th is celebrated as "Party Foundation Day". In 1948 the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) is formed with the capital Pyongyang.

Korean War
During the Korean War, Pyongyang was occupied by South Korean force between October 19, 1950 until December 6, 1950. During the Korean War, targeted by United Nations (U. N.) bombers and fighters and was largely destroyed. Afterwards, the city was rebuilt with foreign aid support from the Soviet Union.

United Nations Military Cemetery Pyongyang
United Nations (U.N.) cemetery in Pyongyang. During Operation Glory, the remains buried in this cemetery were exhumed and returned to American Graves Registration Service (AGRS).
