Ship History Built by Naval Arsenal in Japan. Laid down June 19, 1926 as destroyer no. 35 as the lead ship of the Fubuki-class destroyer. Launched November 15, 1927 as Fubuki 吹雪 meaning "Blizzard" in Japanese. Commissioned August 10, 1928 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) under the command of Lieutenant Commander Shizuo Yamashita. During 1941, assigned to Destroyer Devision 11 (DesDiv 11) with Hatsuyuki and Shirayuki, Desron 3, First Fleet. On November 20, 1941 departs Kure with Desron 3 bound for Samah arriving six days later. On January 4, 1941 departs Samah via Camranh Bay escorting Kumano, Suzuya, Mogami and Mikuma. On December 8, 1941 supports the Japanese invasion force off Malaysia and escorts convoys. On January 10, 1942 aids Asakaze and Hatakaze in rescuing survivors of Akita Maru. PARTIAL HISTORY Sinking History On October 11, 1942 during the Battle of Cape Esperance hit by gunfire from U.S. Navy (USN) cruiser and destroyers. By 10:12pm Fubuki had sustained considerable damage amidships and was burning then foundered and sank off Cape Esperance at roughly Lat 9°06′S Long 159°38′E. Killed In Action was captain, Lieutenant Commander Shizuo Yamashita was killed in action. Officially removed from the Navy list on November 15, 1942. Fates of the Crew A total of 109 crew from Fubuki were rescued by U.S. Navy destroyers USS McCalla (DD-488), USS Hovey (DMS-11) and USS Trever (DD-339).
