Ship History Built by Kawasaki Shipyards in Kobe. Laid down November 17, 1922 as the second Furutaka-class heavy cruiser. Launched April 10, 1925 as Kako 加古 named for the Kako River in Hyōgo Prefecture on Honshu in Japan. Commissioned July 20, 1926 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) under the command of Captain Goto Akira. On August 1, 1926 becomes the flagship of Cruiser Division 5 (CruDiv 5). On November 15, 1927 placed under the command of Captain Junzo Yoshitake. During June 1928 a platform for a Type 2 floatplane is added atop turret no. 4. On December 10, 1928 placed under the command of Captain Toraroku Akiyama. On July 6, 1929 begins refit at Yokosuka Navy Yard with turbines are repaired and upgraded plus ventilation of gasoline storage room is improved. On May 10, 1930 the refit is completed. PARTIAL HISTORY On September 15, 1941 assigned to First Fleet, Cruiser DIvision 6 (CruDiv 6) and the same day placed under the command of Captain Yuji Takahashi with Aoba (flagship), Furutaka and Kinugasa. Wartime History PARTIAL HISOTRY On May 12, 1942 Aoba and Kako arrived at Queen Carola Harbor on Buka Island and both departed on May 14, 1942 bound for Truk. PARTIAL HISOTRY Kako retires from the Battle of Savo Island. Sinking History On August 10, 1942 sunk off Simberi Island at roughly Lat 02°15'S, Long 152°15'E.
