During late July 1942, USS Grunion SS-216 claimed two enemy patrol boats and damaged a third while in search for enemy shipping off Kiska.

Shipwreck
The vessel was heavily damaged and machinery, including the forward-deck capstan, are outside the hull. Likely a subchaser or minelayer. Period subchasers had sharp bows, and this vessel fits the basic dimensions of a 167' length and 22' beam. Another possibility is a net layer or minesweeper; as both types were recorded as sunk in the area too. A mine field was recorded in the US Strategic Bombing Survey of 1946.
