Ship History Built by Maizuru Naval Arsenal at Maizuru. Laid down April 1, 1929 as Destroyer No. 48. Launched May 12, 1930. Comissioned December 3, 1930 as Yūgiri meaning "Evening mist". Also spelled Yugiri in English sources. PARTIAL HISTORY On May 15, 1943 departs Rabaul for an anti-submarine patrol. On May 16, 1943 torpedoed by USS Grayback (SS-208) northwest of Kavieng near Mussau Island at Lat 1°00'S, Long 148°44'W leaving the destroyer dead in the water with severe bow damage and nine crew killed. Afterwards, towed by Amagiri back to Rabaul arriving two days later and placed alongside Yamabiko Maru for emergency repairs. PARTIAL HISTORY Sinking History During the night of November 25, 1943 participated in the Battle of Cape Saint George. On November 26, 1943 sunk by gun fire from USS Charles Ausburne (DD-570), USS Claxton (DD-571) and USS Dyson (DD-572) roughly 50 miles east of Cape Saint George. Lieutenant Commander Otsuji was killed in action. On December 15, 1943 officially removed from the Navy list. Fates of the Crew On November 26, 1943 after the battle, I-177 rescues 278 survivors and I-181 rescues another 11 survivors.
