Ship History Built by Sasebo Naval Arsenal in Sasebo. Laid down August 2, 1938 as a Kagerō-class destroyer. Launched March 24, 1939 as Yukikaze 雪風 meaning "Snowy Wind"" in Japanese. Commissioned January 20, 1940 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). Assigned to Desdiv 16 with TOKITSUKAZE, AMATSUKAZE, HATSUKAZE), Desron 2, Second Fleet. Flagship of Comdesdiv 16, Captain Shiro Shibuya. Wartime History On November 26, 1941 departs with Desron 2 from Terashima Strait bound for Palau arriving five days later. PARTIAL HISTORY On November 13, 1943 after midnight the rain storms ended and the force was ordered to return to course and proceeded to the target area. At 1:42am off Savo Island, the lead destroyers report enemy warships 9,000 meters away and Abe ordered the main guns loaded with Type 0 armor piercing shells as the force enters Iron Bottom Sound. At 1:50am, Hiei and Akatsuki turn on their searchlights to illuminate USS Atlanta (CL-51) and commence gunfire at the start of the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal (Third Battle of the Solomon Sea). At 8:15am Abe orders Kirishima to tow Hiei to Shortlands and orders the rest of his force to withdraw and transfers his flag to destroyer Yukikaze. PARTIAL HISTORY On February 28, 1943 a reinforcement convoy Operation 81 of eight transports escorted by eight destroyers departs Rabaul bound for Lae on New Guinea. The convoy included eight transports loaded with Japanese troops and supplies including Kyokusei Maru, Aiyo Maru, Oikawa Maru, Teiyo Maru, Taimei Maru, Sin-ai Maru, Kembu Maru and Nojima Maru. Escorted by eight destroyers: Tokitsukaze (aboard Lt. General Hatazō Adachi commander 18th Army) Yukikaze (aboard was Lt. General Hidemitsu Nakano, commander 51st Division), Shirayuki (aboard was Rear Admiral Masatomi Kimura), Arashio, Asashio, Asagumo, Shikinami and Uranami. On March 3, 1943 during the Battle of the Bismarck Sea targeted by B-25 Mitchells from 3rd Bomb Group (3rd BG) and rescues 176 crew from damaged Arashio. Postwar On July 6, 1947 turned over to the Republic of China and renamed ROCS Tan Yang. Fate During 1970 broken up for scrap in Taiwan.
