IJN 1937
Ship History
Built by Kawasaki Shipyards in Kobe. Laid down as the lead Asashio-class destroyer. Launched as Arashio 荒潮 meaning "Stormy Tide" or "Storm Tide" in Japanese. Commissioned December 30, 1937 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) assigned to Desdiv 8, Desron 2, Second Fleet under the Commander Hideo Kuboki.

Wartime History
On November 29, 1941 departs Terashima Strait bound for Mako. On December 4, 1941 departs Mako escorting the Southern Force Main Body bound for Malaya and the Philippines at the start of the Pacific War.

PARTIAL HISTORY

Battle of Midway
On June 4, 1942 at the start of the Battle of Midway escorting the support group bound for Midway. On June 5, 1942 at 5:20am destroyers Arashio, Hagikaze, Maikaze and Nowaki scuttled damaged Akagi with torpedoes. Afterwards, Arashio helped rescued her surviving crew and transfered them onto Battleship Mutsu.

On June 6, 1942 west of Midway targeted by SBDs from USS Hornet (CV-8) and USS Enterprise (CV-6) that score near misses that cause damage and results in 37 dead and wounds Commander Nobuki Ogawa of Comdesdiv 8. Afterwards, rescues survivors from Mikuma with Mogami and Asashio then departs the escorting Mogami to Truk.

On June 14, 1942 arrives Truk and undergoes emergency repairs by Akashi. On July 23, 1942 departs for Sasebo for additional repairs completed by October 20, 1942. On November 12, 1942 departs for Rabaul. On November 22, 1942 escorts transports from Rabaul to Buna and returns. On December 1, 1942 escorts transports to Buna. On December 8, 1942 escorts transports to Buna but aborts due to air attacks.

PARTIAL HISTORY

Battle of the Bismarck Sea
On February 28, 1943 departs Rabaul as one of eight destroyers escorting a convoy of eight transports bound for Lae. On March 1, 1943 the convoy was spotted by B-24D "Miss Deed" 41-24070 off Kimbe Bay that reported the convoy by radio and used cloud cover to shadow. On March 2, 1943 at the start of the Battle of the Bismarck Sea the Japanese convoy was targeted by Allied bombers and fighters.

Sinking History
On March 3, 1943 targeted by B-25 Mitchells from 3rd Bomb Group (3rd BG) and reportedly hit by bombs dropped by B-25C "Chatter Box" 41-13088. Aboard, Commander Kuboki was killed on the bridge. Damaged and out of control, collided with Nojima Maru. Afterwards, the damaged destroyer was abandoned with 176 crew rescued by Yukikaze.

On March 4, 1943 the abandoned destroyer was sunk by Allied planes in the Huon Gulf roughly 55 miles southeast of Finschafen at roughly 7° 15 S, Long 148° 15 E. On April 1, 1943 officially removed from the Navy list.

(Page 59) "No further contacts were made until the next day [June 6, 1942] when dive-bombers from both Hornet and Enterprise attacked and sank Mikuma and seriously damaged Mogami and the destroyer Arashio.
During this battle, carrier-based dive-bombers made 191 sorties obtaining 32 hits, 15 of which were the principle factors in the destruction of the First Air Fleet carrier force while the remainder sank the Mikuma and damaged the Mogami and Arashio."
