Ship History Built by Kure Navy Yard in Kure. Laid down October 27, 1931 as Mogami-class Heavy Cruiser. Launched March 14, 1934 as Mogami. Comissioned July 28, 1935 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). Wartime History PARTIAL HISORY On July 19, 1944 departs Truk on a troop transport run with a task group: including Nisshin, cruisers Tone and Chikuma, and Agano with destroyers Hatsuzuki, SUZUTSUKI, ARASHI, HAGIKAZE and Isokaze. On July 21, 1944 arrived at Rabaul and disembarks the troops. On October 20, 1944 arrives Brunei. On October 22, 1944 Force "C" departs Brunei as part of Operation Ho-1-Go (Victory) bound for Leyte for the Battle of Leyte Gulf. On October 24, 1944 in the morning arrives at the entrance to the Mindanao Sea and Mogani launches her no. 1 plane, E13A1 Jake piloted by Ens Spec. Duty Gizo Kasuya to perform a reconassiance of Leyte Gulf. Sinking History On October 25, 1944 begins the Battle of Surigao Strait. After midnight, Mogami Group is attacked unsuccessfully by PT-146, PT-151 and PT-190. Captain Toma orders to reverse course to rejoin Force "C". At 1:05am in limited visibility, hit by a 152mm shell fired by Fuso, although a dud, it kills three sailors in the aft sick bay. Afterwards, takes up a cruising station stern of Fuso. At 10:47am abandoned and scuttled by destroyer Akebono with a single torpedo that hits the port side. At 1:07pm sinks bow first at roughly Lat 9-30N, Long 124-56E. Aboard, 191 crew and one civilian crew are lost. Officially removed from the Navy list on December 20, 1944. Rescue Akebono rescues 700 survivors including 125 wounded, four later died. Shipwreck On May 8, 2019 the shipwreck was found by R/V Petrel at a depth of 4,760' / 1,451m. The cruiser is largely intact and upright on the seafloor with the bow seporated from the hull nearby.
