Ship History Built by Mitsubishi's Shipyard at Nagasaki. Ordered in fiscal year 1932. Laid down December 1, 1934 as the lead ship of the Tone-class heavy cruiser. Launched November 21, 1937 as Tone 利根 (pronounced Toh-Neh) named for the Tone River in the Kantō Region of Honshū in Japan. Completed and comissioned November 20, 1938 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) under the command of Captain Teizo Hara assigned to Crusier Division 8 (CruDiv 8) and attached to the Yokosuka Naval District. On December 1, 1939 attached to the Maizuru Naval District with Chikuma. On October 15, 1940 placed under the command of Captain Masao Nishida. On September 10, 1941 placed under the command of Captain Tametsugu Okada. On November 26, 1941 departs Hitokappu Bay for Operation Z eastward bound for Hawaii with Chikuma part of Vice Admiral Gunichi Mikawa's support force with BatDiv 3/Section 1 Hiei and Kirishima, DesRon 1's light cruiser Abukuma plus destroyers and supply groups Nos. 1 and 2. Escort the 1st Air Fleet Striking Force (Kido Butai) under Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo including CarDiv 1's Akagi and Kaga, CarDiv 2's Hiryu and Soryu, CarDiv 5's Shokaku and Zuikaku. On December 2, 1941 roughly 940 miles north of Midway, the force receives the signal "Niitakayama nobore 1208" (Climb Mt. Niitaka 1208) signifying hostilities will commence. Wartime History On December 7, 1941 at 5:00am Tone launches an E13A Jake coded JI-1 pilot WO Ryozo Narukawa that performs a reconnaissance over Lahaina Roads and observes no U.S. warships in the anchorage. At 6:30am launches a E8N2 Dave to patrol south of the strike force. PARTIAL HISTORY Sinking History On July 24, 1945 bombed by U.S. Navy (USN) carrier planes from USS Monterey (CVL-26) off Nishinomi Shima to the west of Kure Harbor off Kure and sinks with deck and superstructure above the surface. On November 20, 1945 officially removed from the Navy List. Shipwreck Postwar, the shipwreck was raised and broken up for scrap between 1947-1948.
